Hunter Hawks: Where Are They Now? - Rebecca Daverin '08

The new Hunter College Athletics Alumni Chapter has continued a segment, "Hunter Hawks: Where Are They Now?" We caught up with a former women's basketball student-athlete from 2005-08, Rebecca Daverin to find out what she's been up to!

Where do you live now and what are you up to these days?
I live in Kensington, Brooklyn and I am the Senior Director of Operations for Explore Schools, a non-profit organization that manages four charter schools in central Brooklyn.

Why did you choose Hunter College?
My father was a Professor at John Jay and felt strongly that CUNY could provide me with an academically rigorous and enriching undergraduate experience that was affordable. Hunter was by far the best fit within the CUNY system.

What is your favorite memory as a Hawk?
My JV team and I made a scrapbook for Coach Sue to honor the impact she made on the Hunter College Athletics program. The combined memories of making the book and surprising her are my favorite memories as a Hawk. I also loved going to the ropes course with my varsity team- this is where I became great friends with Nancy Olisma.

Do you still keep in touch with any of your former teammates and if so, who?
Yes. I keep in contact with Nancy Olisma the most. I also keep in touch with Coach Sue and Coach Vana. Additionally I am friends with Megan McKenna, Claire Madden, Erin Miley, and Shay on FB and see them from time to time. Shay and I also still play together sometimes. I also play with and against Leza, Topaz and Chico, but they all played at Hunter before me.

Do you still follow the Hawks and what are your thoughts on the program today?
I do not keep up with the program as much as I would like to because I am often too busy with work, but I am going to try harder this coming year.

How has your experience as a Hawk or your sport helped you in your post-collegiate life?
Even though my time as a Hawk was very short, I think it played a critical role in shaping the person I have become. I think participating in college sports helps to build confidence and teaches invaluable lessons about teamwork that are very transferable to working in the real world. I also built lasting friendships and always feel like I have a home at Hunter. Additionally my participation in basketball has allowed me to remain active as I still play in adult leagues around the city.
